Malaria Day - Walks for Nets - 25/4/2010
Students from Blackburn College took part in a charity walk to raise money for the ‘Walk for Nets’ campaign ahead of World Malaria Day on Sunday 25th April.
In conjunction Faiths Act at Blackburn Cathedral, the walk took place on Friday which was also St George’s Day, providing an ideal occasion for all students to unite and make a contribution to this worthy cause. Faiths Act brings together young people of different backgrounds to work on the Millennium Development Goal of eradicating deaths due to malaria. A group from Woman’s Voice also took part in the walk.
All the walkers had been moved by the plight of the children that die unnecessarily across the world from Malaria when a net costing just £5 would save two lives. Students were joined on the walk by a group from Woman’s Voice, Singer/Song Writer Mary HD and Rapper NAS-T, an ex Blackburn College student. NAS-T, who has been hailed as “Northwest’s Number 1 “DJ, Producer and MC” also wrote a rap for the NSPCC in 2001 and always finds time in his busy schedule to do various charity work.
Anjum Anwar, Dialogue Development Officer at Blackburn Cathedral said: “It was great to see College students getting involved in raising funds ahead of World Malaria Day on Sunday 25th April 2010.”
Blackburn College raised over £300 towards ‘Walk for Nets’ and hoped that some of the lives that are lost unnecessarily from Malaria would be saved.
All students who took part were automatically entered into a prize draw to win a signed David Beckham t-shirt. The lucky winner was Level 2 Hairdressing student Naiyla Mahmood.
